Gemma Barbaresco 2018 - Last Bottle

Gemma Barbaresco 2018

Hump Day? As if!!! When you discover, as we did, the absolute best quality/value/tippy-top tastiest BARBARESCO you’ve tried in many a moon – and then work out a deal to sling it to the thirsty hordes of the Last Bottle faithful – at the incredible price that we have TODAY? Wednesday might as well be the weekend – a SUPER weekend – I’d even say! YES! No two ways about it...my Super Bowl viewing party just added this KILLER Gemma Barbaresco 2018 to the line-up – and I’ll wager the combined yearly earnings of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift that this fantastic beast doesn’t survive to the halftime show!

The classic brilliance of nebbiolo – and that elegant side of the grape that shines brightest in Barbaresco? This exquisite bottle has it in spades! Crimson roses, that slightly medicinal, lung-awakening camphor, then those addictive Amarena cherries (do I even like Manhattans? Or do I just want the cherry?), followed by fig leaf, balsamic, cinnamon red hots, carried by these grippy, yet super-fine tannins, finishing with a smattering of dark chocolate, raspberry Linzer cookies, cedar, spearmint, white pepper, and sage…and…AND! I naively poured a small taste (I’m trying, doc!), but had to rush back and fill my whole glass…this is a flat-out gorgeous nebbiolo of the highest order....wow! Anyone who appreciates the finest that northern Italy can do in a sexier, more approachable style than the longer aging Barolos....this beautiful, fantastically complex, and sensuous wine (at a NEVER-to-be-seen-again price!!) is a must!

Gemma is an off-the-radar Langhe gem – making tragically small amounts of Barolo, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera, and more. Longtime Alba-expert (and crack cyclist and Piemonte tour guide) Giorgio Barbero has crafted these wines for decades – and how they aren’t WAY more famous (and, ipso facto, way more $$$) is a mystery I’ll never fully understand. But we found them, loved them dearly, and brought every last bottle we could to these shores. Now, it's YOUR TURN! 94 POINTS! Get after it, people!

With 26 hectares of vineyards in the Langhe region, Gemma boasts a diverse range of wines, including Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera D'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Langhe Nebbiolo. Gemma's vineyards are strategically located in Serralunga D'Alba, Monforte D'Alba, La Morra, and Roddino, showcasing the rich terroir of the Langhe region.

About The Producer

Established in 1978 by Silvano Piacentini in the heart of the Barolo region, specifically Serralunga D'Alba, Gemma Cantine has evolved into a forward-thinking winery committed to environmental sustainability. In 2012, the winery underwent a significant renewal, incorporating modern construction techniques and environmentally friendly practices, such as a photovoltaic plant and a geothermal system. These innovations led Gemma to achieve ISO 14067 certification for zero CO2 emissions throughout the entire winemaking process, from the vineyard to the bottle. Notably, the winery's commitment to sustainability is overseen by Luigi, Silvano's son, who manages the company alongside Giorgio Barbero, an oenologist and agronomist responsible for viticultural and winemaking operations.
