Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin 2014 - Last Bottle

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin 2014

Us: “Did you say $45?”

Them: “If you buy everything we have…”

Us: “DONE. Can we pick it up right now?”

Boom! That is how we roll when it comes to killer-diller, diggalicious, rich, wonderful, happy-making world-class Chateauneuf-du-Pape!! YES! Best price on Earth!!

Here’s the thing: 2014 in Chateauneuf made wines with FANTASTIC, “Burgundian”-like weight -- they’re a bit less jammy and that makes them SENSUAL and absolutely wonderful to drink now (although you can hold this one for a decade). Domaine de la Janasse is a David Bowie-level rockstar, of course, with more huge scores and critical acclaim than we could ever count up. And like some of the old Bowie stuff, it is MIND-BENDING in the best way -- super complex and packed with warm berry compote, lavender perfume, crushed rose petals and tasty pie crust, sweet herbs (think tarragon, spearmint, star anise, cinnamon…) and just wonderful weight and mouthfeel. Crazy-delish to drink (we know, we ARE drinking it).

Mind-blowing price for this cuvee, as well, and a case-worthy CDP for sure if you drink it in the kind of quantities we do!! ALAS, it is super-limited, so please grab it while we have it. Janasse! Wow!

The peculiarity of this wine (Chaupin) is that the grapes it comes from only grow on sandy plots in different parts of the Chateauneuf appellation: Chapouin, Janasse (north), La Crau (southeast). The oldest vines were planted in 1912, and are grown without pesticides or insecticides; manure is natural. The land is thoroughly tilled in order to keep it ventilated and loose.

About The Producer

The estate was founded in 1976 by Aimé Sabon, the father of Christophe and Isabelle, who still oversees the vineyards. The property consists of 40 hectares, spread over as many as 70 different parcels throughout the appellation. While Aimé works in the vineyards, his children, Christophe and Isabelle, are in charge of wine production. Christophe is a self-proclaimed “great defender of Grenache,” which still represents 75% of their vines. With assistance from Aimé and Isabelle, he manages the common rusticity of Grenache-based wines through meticulous work in the vineyards and
cellar. The result is a wide range of rich and flavorful Châteauneuf-du-Papes ,Cotes-du-Rhônes and Vins de Pays that are complex and balanced – often in contradiction to a region better known for sheer exuberance and power.
